Welcome!

I’m a bass singer, broadcaster & classical music commentator based in Wellington, New Zealand. This website is intended to be a mini showcase of my work, both in terms of performing and musical commentary.

I should, perhaps, explain the use of the word “commentator” above.
I try to avoid the term “critic”.
For a start, I’m not one. I don’t make a habit of going along to concerts and critiquing them in the manner of (say) George Bernard Shaw (whose collected writings on music I would highly recommend, by the way). And after reading Hans Keller’s book Criticsm, in which he posited that the music critic was one of many “phoney professions”, I’ve tended to avoid using the term. Nonetheless, I regularly contribute to a record review programme on Radio New Zealand Concert, and in the “articles” section you’ll find a few musings on the subject of classical music. More to come.

My appropriation of the Bach Monogram in the upper left corner (some info on it here) is a bit cheeky, perhaps; but as I perform quite a lot of his music, and have a particular passion for historical recordings of his works, I hope Johann Sebastian would forgive me for “stealing” his logo!
